With four storms hitting Haiti in three weeks, 600 people have been killed leaving 650,000 more, including 300,000 children, in desperate need of food, clean water, and shelter.
Hundreds of bodies were found in Gonaives, in north-western Haiti, after a five-metre wall of water and mud engulfed much of the city of 350,000.
Thousands of Red Cross volunteers are working round the clock to help the mounting number of victims from the storms. Continuing heavy rains blocked access to the affected areas making delivery of essential aid extremely hazardous, and delaying much-needed humanitarian assessments. The United Nations is preparing to issue an appeal for funds for Haiti, and has requested international aid.
